When Is It Safe For My Child To Receive Fluoride?
When your child’s teeth start coming in, it is time to schedule a dental appointment! This commonly occurs around six months of age. Children who regularly visit their dentist and receive fluoride treatment have a better chance of preventing complications and protecting their teeth in years to come. Getting a fluoride cleaning at the dentist is a safe and common practice in dental care. We use fluoride varnish, which is painted on the teeth after the dental cleaning visit. It is very quick and convenient, so your child can have the benefits of fluoride for their teeth in no time!
What Is Dental Fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral commonly found in water, soil, and various minerals. It is well known for its role in dental health, helping to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay. In many areas, fluoride is added to the public water in controlled amounts to reduce the incidence of cavities. It can be found in toothpaste, mouth rinses, and dental treatments. At Jo-Anne Johnson DMD, we use AAP(American Dental Association)—and FDA-approved fluoride treatments to help children develop strong and healthy teeth.
At What Age Should Children Receive Dental Fluoride?
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children begin fluoride treatment when the teeth break the gums, generally around six months. Most children should plan to receive fluoride treatment every three to six months, depending on the child’s risk of developing cavities in the future. Children who are at a high risk of developing cavities should schedule fluoride appointments more frequently if they don’t have water with fluoride or receiving orthodontic work like braces.
How Often Should Children Receive Fluoride Treatments?
After your child’s first appointment around 6 months, we recommend following up with fluoride varnish treatments in regular intervals, usually 2-4 times a year until the age of 5. Then, after considering the child’s risk of developing cavities and general oral health, we recommend continuing with these fluoride varnish treatments after age 5. The number of treatments depends on how likely it is for your child to get cavities.
